Planning a new building.

A Lean project enabled the hospital to bring together three separate units and select the optimal feasibility plan before construction of the new building began.

Background

The hospital plans to construct a new building to bring together three currently dispersed units (Medical Imaging, Admissions Office, and Blood Draw Center) and intends for it to serve as the main patient entry point to the hospital, in order to address the lack of clarity at the current site. To design the technical specifications (the architect’s working basis), management wishes to employ a Lean Design approach.

It would have been a sure thing if:

  • The views of all stakeholders are incorporated into the feasibility study.
  • Obstacles in the future scenario are identified, and appropriate solutions are proposed.

The process:

Five Kaizen initiatives brought together about 50 participants over a 9-month period, under the supervision of a technical committee.

Kaizen 1: Problems with the Current Situation

  • Identification of problems related to facilities and organization.

Mini Kaizen: Project Success Criteria

  • Development of the “Vision of Success” matrix, incorporating aspects related to facilities and organization.

Kaizen 2: Benchmarking and Performance Plan

  • Refinement of the success vision matrix following benchmark analysis.

  • Identification of priority initiatives to be undertaken regarding organizational aspects.

Kaizen 3: Functional Diagrams

  • Defining the need for close collaboration between entities.

  • Development of functional diagrams at the macro level, followed by the micro level.

Kaizen 4: Feasibility Study

  • Selection of a feasibility scenario proposed by the planning firm, consistent with the success vision matrix.

Our results:

  • Incorporating the perspectives of all stakeholders.
  • Selection of the best feasibility scenario by the building’s future users, based on the stakeholders’ measurable requirements.
  • Identification of priority projects to be carried out prior to the construction of the new building.
