Background
Within a major energy conglomerate, the Production Department aims to address its performance challenges by launching a program that includes an operational efficiency component involving on-site projects. As part of this effort, the Quality Management team at a nuclear facility decided to pilot a 5S approach.
It would have been a sure thing if:
- The issues encountered by the field teams were taken into account.
- Employees were given the responsibility to improve their day-to-day operations.
- Facilitation skills were developed in-house.
The process:
Overall assessment of the auto repair shop:
- Raising the team’s awareness of the process.
- Collecting and measuring problems on the shop floor.
- Target vision, macro-level implementation, procurement needs.
- Approval of the roadmap, including the pilot sector.
Prioritization and 5S support for two pilot areas:
- Support throughout the implementation process, including the definition and implementation of visual standards.
- Preparation and debriefing of work sessions.
- Summary, Lessons Learned.
Our results:
- Workshop reorganized to make the team’s day-to-day work easier:
- Improved workplace ergonomics.
- Space set aside for storing preparations awaiting processing.
- Optimized time and travel.
- 20 zone standards defined and displayed.
- An independent in-house coach ready to lead a future project.
